Liputan6.com, Jakarta The director of the latest Superman movie, James Gunn, is in the spotlight after referring to the iconic DC character as “an immigrant who came from somewhere else.”
The statement drew strong reactions from some conservatives in the United States, including supporters of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement.

Gunn's statement previously appeared in an exclusive interview with The Times of London.
On that occasion, he said that the story of Superman reflects “the story of America,” which is about someone who comes from somewhere else to build a new life, with the main value being human kindness.
"I think Superman is an American story. An immigrant who comes from somewhere else and contributes to shaping this country. But most of all, it's a story about the value of human kindness that is increasingly being forgotten," Gunn said.
Gunn's Statement
When asked about the reaction to his comments, James Gunn explained that the movie is for “everyone” and he doesn't have “anything to say to anyone” who spreads negativity about Superman.
“I'm not here to judge people,” he told Variety at the Superman premiere Monday night at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
“I think it's a movie about kindness and I think that's something that everyone can relate to,” he added.
Responding to the controversy as well, actor Nathan Fillion who plays the character of Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) gave a brief response.
"Someone seems to need a hug. It's just a movie, guys," Fillion said with a laugh.

Support from brother
Meanwhile, Sean Gunn, who is also James' younger brother and plays the character Maxwell Lord, voiced his support for the director, while emphasizing the importance of the role of immigrants in American history.
"We love immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and the people we support in this country are immigrants. If you don't agree with that, then you don't understand American values," said Sean.
James Gunn's latest Superman movie is one of DC Studios' big projects and is scheduled to air in July 2025.
Anticipated film
However, even before its official airing, the film has been labeled “superwoke” by conservative media in the US, who accuse the movie of inserting a certain ideological agenda.
Still, despite the controversy, James Gunn's Superman remains one of the most anticipated films of the year.
