Liputan6.com, Jakarta A new snack brand, Rewind, has made waves in the European food scene by launching a uniquely unconventional product: 9-volt battery-flavored corn chips.
Debuting in the Netherlands and set to roll out across more European markets, these chips aim to satisfy the odd childhood curiosity that saw many daring to lick a 9-volt battery for its tingling, metallic buzz.
How does it taste and what is the background to making this unique snack?
Turning a Universal Odd Memory Into a Snack
Rewind’s new corn chips are crafted to mimic the sharp tang and energizing “zap” of a battery, using a blend of citric acid, sodium bicarbonate, and mineral salts to produce the distinctive metallic flavor and tongue-tingling effect—without any actual battery components involved.
"We wanted to create a taste that sparks curiosity, drawing from a quirky universal memory of the 90s," explained chef and flavorist Mattias Larsson.
Reception and Experience
The chips have generated viral interest, with social media users intrigued and some reviewers actually contrasting the chips’ zing and mineral taste with the real sensation of licking a battery.
While the sharp tang is less harsh than expected, the underlying “battery metal” experience stands out as both nostalgic and creative.
Some testers compare the sensation to salt and vinegar chips, but with a stronger mineral note.
Variations and Prices
The 9-volt battery flavor, marketed as a limited edition, joins more traditional chip varieties by Rewind, like Cheese & Onion, Tangy Sriracha, Creamy Paprika, and BBQ & Honey—all priced around €1.89 per bag.
Creative director Antti Lauronen described the campaign as an attempt to “revive retro memories through unexpected sensory experiences.”
The snack is now available in major Dutch supermarkets, with expansion to other regions expected soon.
Rewind emphasizes safety: the product is entirely food-grade and safe, with no encouragement to actually lick batteries.
