As reported by CBS, the incident left three people injured in one of the world's most bustling and iconic areas.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) immediately responded to the incident, securing the scene, and launching an intensive investigation.

The shooter, a 17-year-old, was arrested shortly afterward.

The incident began with a verbal altercation that escalated into shooting.

The injured victims, a woman and two men, were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

All victims are reported to be in stable and non-life-threatening condition, providing some relief amid public concern.


How the Times Square Shooting Incident Happened

The Times Square shooting occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. local time on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

The shooting occurred at the intersection of West 44th Street and 7th Avenue, a strategic location frequently crowded with tourists and locals.

Witnesses reported a fight breaking out inside the Raising Cane's restaurant before gunfire was heard.

"We literally thought it was fake. We thought it was like firecrackers or ... fireworks. We didn't believe it," one witness said.

A verbal altercation between the perpetrator and one of the victims is believed to have triggered the incident.

The initially tense situation quickly escalated, culminating in gunfire, injuring several individuals.

Videos circulating on social media showed panicked crowds attempting to flee the area, creating a tense atmosphere amidst the bustling Times Square.

Following the shooting, police immediately closed off portions of Seventh Avenue and Broadway in the area.

More than a dozen police cars lined the streets, securing the area and facilitating the investigation.


Victim's Identity and Current Condition

Three people were injured in the Times Square shooting.

The first victim was an 18-year-old woman who suffered a graze wound to the neck.

The second victim, a 19-year-old man, was shot in the right leg.

The third victim, a 65-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg.

All victims were immediately rushed to Bellevue Hospital for medical treatment.

The hospital confirmed that the three victims were in stable condition and their injuries were not life-threatening.

Initial police investigations indicate that the 19-year-old man was the primary target of the perpetrator.

The other two victims, an 18-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man, were innocent bystanders who fell victim to stray gunfire.


Arrest of the Perpetrator and Legal Process

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the Times Square shooting. 

The arrest occurred not far from the scene.

The perpetrator's identity has not been publicly disclosed due to his age.

As reported by CBS, the authorities has charged the 17-year-old shooter with the following: 

  • Murder
  • Two counts of attempted murder
  • Three counts of assault
  • Three counts of reckless endangerment
  • Two counts of criminal possession of a weapon

Times Square is one of New York's gun-free zones, created in 2022 under a sweeping state law that bans firearms in so-called sensitive locations, but street vendors say shootings continue to happen in the area.
