Liputan6.com, Jakarta The NFL world was shocked by the news of a major trade involving wide receiver John Metchie III.

The talented Canadian player is now officially part of the Philadelphia Eagles, leaving the Houston Texans after two seasons.

The trade was announced on Sunday, August 17, 2025, and immediately captured the attention of American football fans.

John Metchie III's move to the Eagles was more than just a trade; it involved several players and important draft picks.

Initial reports of the John Metchie III trade came from prominent journalist Adam Schefter of ESPN, and were later confirmed by multiple sources.

John Metchie III Trade Details

The trade that brought John Metchie III to the Philadelphia Eagles was a complex transaction involving several key assets from both teams.

The Eagles acquired the wide receiver along with a sixth-round draft pick in 2026.

On the other hand, the Houston Texans received veteran tight end Harrison Bryant as part of the deal.

Additionally, the Texans also acquired a fifth-round draft pick in 2026 from the Eagles.

This pick swap is interesting because it represents a reversal of a previous deal involving cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson and guard Kenyon Green in March.

For the Texans, Harrison Bryant is expected to contribute at tight end, while the Eagles view John Metchie III as a long-term investment who can add a new dimension to their offensive attack.

Profile and Career Journey of John Metchie III

John Metchie III is a Taiwanese-Canadian professional wide receiver born on July 18, 2000.

He played for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2019 to 2021, where he showed great promise.

While at Alabama, Metchie twice won the Jon Cornish Trophy as the best Canadian player in NCAA football.

Metchie's early NFL career was marred by serious health challenges.

After being selected by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia in July 2022.

He successfully returned to play in the 2023 season after undergoing intensive treatment and was declared cured of his illness.

In 2024, he was even awarded the George Halas Award by the Pro Football Writers of America.

In two full seasons with the Texans, Metchie recorded a total of 40 catches for 412 receiving yards and one touchdown.

In the 2023 season, he finished 16 games with 16 catches for 158 yards.

His improvement was evident in the 2024 season, where he recorded 24 catches for 254 yards and scored his first professional touchdown against the Detroit Lions.

John Metchie's role in the Philadelphia Eagles

With the addition of John Metchie III, the Philadelphia Eagles now have even more depth at wide receiver.

He will join an already strong receiving group, including big names like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Jahan Dotson.

This move will also reunite Metchie with some of his former Alabama teammates.

He will once again play alongside DeVonta Smith, who was part of the Alabama team that won the 2020 National Championship.

In addition to Smith, the Eagles also have several other Alabama alumni like Jalen Hurts, Landon Dickerson, and Tyler Steen, who can help Metchie adapt.
