Liputan6.com, Jakarta North India faces extreme heat waves. People in Varanasi turned to a unique tradition to pray for rain: a frog wedding. They married a male and female frog, hoping to bring rain and relief from the scorching temperatures.
User @ghantaa shared this moment on social media, and the video spread quickly. It showed the frog couple under a red cloth, as reported by Indian Express.
The Wedding
The wedding held on 2024. A priest led the ceremony, surrounded by a crowd of excited locals. The event was full of life with prayers, rituals, and traditional songs sung by local women.
An Instagram user wrote, "This is common in rural India. Why not honor their traditions?"
Another said, "A new marriage opens."
Another joked, "We did frog weddings before GTA 6."
Frog Marriage
Frog marriage is known as "bhekuli biya" in Assamese. It is a traditional practice in Assam. According to an old poem, the sound of frogs is believed to bring rain.
The poem says that farmers asked the clouds why there was no rain, and the clouds replied that there would be no rain without the sound of frogs.
This is because the rainy season overlaps with the frogs' mating period. Frogs' voices are thought to be called rain.
