This sports drama will chronicle the inspiring life of Christy Martin, a legendary female boxer who broke many boundaries in the world of boxing.

With Sydney Sweeney playing this iconic role, audiences will delve into the ups and downs of the career and personal life of the "Coal Miner's Daughter" from West Virginia.

The film also highlights her complex relationship with her trainer and husband, Jim Martin.

The movie successfully premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 5, 2025.

Sydney Sweeney underwent a remarkable physical transformation to play Christy Martin, gaining approximately 30 pounds and undergoing months of intensive training.

The Stars and Production Team Behind "Christy"

In addition to Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin, the film has other several casts.

Ben Foster plays James V. Martin, Christy's trainer and abusive husband, while Merritt Wever plays Joyce Salters, Christy's conservative mother.

Katy O'Brian plays Lisa Holewyne, Christy's biggest boxing opponent, and Ethan Embry plays John Salters, Christy's conservative father.

"Christy" is directed by David Michôd, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Mirrah Foulkes.

The strong production team includes Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Teddy Schwarzman, Brent Stiefel, Justin Lothrop, David Michôd, and Sydney Sweeney herself as producer.

Leading production companies Black Bear Pictures and Anonymous Content are responsible for the film's production, with Black Bear Pictures also serving as distributor.

Christy Martin, born Christy Renea Salters on June 12, 1968, is a pioneering figure who changed the face of women's boxing.

Nicknamed "Coal Miner's Daughter" due to her family's background in the West Virginia mines, Martin showed athletic talent from a young age, including playing basketball at Concord College.

Her boxing career began in 1989 after competing in the Toughman/Toughwoman contest, marking the beginning of an incredible journey.

In 1993, Christy Martin made history by signing with legendary boxing promoter Don King, becoming the first female boxer to appear on Showtime.

She was known for her aggressive fighting style and for breaking many gender barriers in the sport, paving the way for other female athletes.

One of her landmark fights was against Deirdre Gogarty in 1996, often called the "woman's fight of the century."

She married her trainer, Jim Martin, who was 25 years her senior.

In 2010, Martin was the victim of an assassination attempt by her husband, who stabbed and shot her, but she survived the horrific attack.

Martin later testified against him in court.

In 2017, he found new happiness by marrying Lisa Holewyne, also a boxer.
