This poor result adds to Manchester United's long list of defeats in the 2025/2026 Premier League season, with just one win in four matches.
Manchester City Domination
Manchester City displayed complete dominance from the start, with Phil Foden breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute.
Foden's header came from a precise cross from Jeremy Doku, who was the driving force of City's attacks down the flanks.
Erling Haaland took center stage in the second half, scoring twice.
His first goal came in the 53rd minute, again from an assist from Jeremy Doku, showcasing the pair's excellent coordination. Haaland nearly completed his hat-trick but his shot hit the post.
Haaland's second goal in the 68th minute came from a brilliant individual effort, as he raced from the middle of the pitch, beat Harry Maguire, and met a through ball from Bernardo Silva.
City's new goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, also impressed, keeping a clean sheet on his debut, including a crucial save from Bryan Mbeumo.
Manchester United Crisis
With just one win in four Premier League matches, the Red Devils are currently stranded in 14th place in the standings.
Ruben Amorim himself admitted that the goals conceded by his team were preventable, especially the second goal, which showed defensive fragility.
"The performance was not good," he said after a 3-0 defeat to Man City. "In the important moments, they were better than us.
He also didn't deny that his team's performance fell short of expectations, and that City were indeed superior in crucial moments.
"I'm trying to be rational. I see the record. I understand the frustration and I understand the decisions that come with that. I take the critics. That's it."
The defeat also makes wide debate about the effectiveness of Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system, with many questioning the suitability of the tactic for United's squad.
A Tough Schedule Awaits the Red Devils
After a crushing defeat in the Manchester derby, Manchester United face a tough schedule for the remainder of September 2025.
Gary Neville believes the pressure is now mounting on Amorim as head coach and another defeat to Chelsea next weekend.
"I just feel nothing, which is even worse. This has been a nothing of a performance. United have just been beaten.
"With Chelsea next week, another defeat and big questions would start to be asked."
They are scheduled to face Chelsea on September 20 at Old Trafford, followed by an away match against Brentford on September 27.
