While there is no official cause of death has been confirmed yet, an early investigation by Delta State University Police Chief Michael Peeler determined there was no evidence of foul play, as reported by WAPT.
"Our community is deeply saddened by this loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those impacted by Tre's loss," said Delta State University President Daniel Ennis.
Body Discovery and Investigation Details
The body of Demartravion "Trey" Reed was discovered by university police on Monday morning, September 15, 2025.
Delta State University police Chief Michael Peeler said Reed was found just after 7 a.m. Monday hanging from a tree on the central campus of DSU near the school's pickleball courts.
"Pending an investigation, further investigation and also from the medical examiner's office, we won't have more information until that part has been done," Peeler said.
In a press release, he confirmed that no signs of foul play were identified in the initial stages of the investigation.
Bolivar County Deputy Coroner Murray Roark told the Mississippi Free Press in a Sept. 15 interview that he assisted his colleague, Deputy Coroner Dwayne Proctor, in examining Reed's body.
Contrary to rumors circulating on social media, Roark said he saw no signs of broken arms or legs.
“I saw no broken limbs,” he said. Roark declined to elaborate further, stating that the case was still under investigation.
“I don’t think I should probably discuss this any further than that, my opinion is that it was self-done, and I have reasons for that.”
Campus Official Reactions
Reed's death has caused a profound wave of grief and prompted the cancellation of the institution's centennial celebrations scheduled for the same day.
Delta State University President, Dr. Dan Ennis, offered his heartfelt condolences to Reed's family and friends.
“I have spoken to Trey’s family, and expressed our heartbreak,” Ennis said at today’s press event, adding that conversations with student leaders over prayer services were ongoing.
As a gesture of support, the university immediately provided counseling and psychological support services for students, faculty, and staff, as reported by MFP.
Despite this tragic incident, campus officials emphasized that Delta State University remains a safe environment.
“Delta State University is a beautiful place to be,” the campus police chief said. “It’s unfortunate, this loss that comes heavy to our campus.”
Public Speculation: Reed's Death of Racist Violence?
The incident at DSU escalated when a TikTok user, claiming to be Trey Reed's cousin, accused Reed's death of racist violence.
As reported by Mint, he accused Delta State University, founded in 1924 as a predominantly white public university, of having a history of violence against Black students.
“Now, I just got off the phone with one of my cousins,” the user said. "She said she seen the reports and it said that he was beaten and bruised. Both his arms were broken and he had a broken leg. I'm gonna let y'all do the math.
