OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT Atlas on October 21, 2025, an AI-powered web browser. What are its key features?

Liputan6.com, Jakarta OpenAI, the creator behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, has taken a new step by launching an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered web browser called ChatGPT Atlas on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that the current development of AI represents a once-in-a-decade opportunity to rethink and redefine what a browser can do.

“We think that AI represents a rare, once-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during a livestream announcing Atlas.

“Tabs were great, but we haven’t seen a lot of browser innovation since then.”

With a vision to make AI the core of the browsing experience, OpenAI hopes ChatGPT Atlas can transform into the default operating system for the ever-evolving era of artificial intelligence.

OpenAI said that the Atlas browser will be available starting today to ChatGPT users worldwide on macOS. Windows and mobile versions are currently in development.

Atlas is free, although its agent features are only available to subscribers of OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro plans.

ChatGPT Atlas: Innovative Features

ChatGPT Atlas comes with a suite of advanced features that integrate AI capabilities directly into the web browsing experience.

Each new tab in Atlas can function as a live conversation with ChatGPT, allowing users to easily type questions, paste links, or initiate research tasks.

Furthermore, the browser features a ChatGPT sidebar that allows users to interact with various aspects of the website they're visiting, such as summarizing content, comparing products, or analyzing data without ever leaving the page.

“We’ve made some major upgrades to search on ChatGPT when accessed via Atlas,” Ryan O’Rouke, OpenAI’s lead designer for the browser, said during the livestream.

If a user asks for movie reviews in the Atlas search bar, a chatbot-style answer will pop up first, rather than the more traditional collection of blue links users might expect when searching the web via Google.

One of the most exciting features is Agent Mode, available to Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers.

This mode allows ChatGPT to perform actions on behalf of the user, such as booking a restaurant reservation, ordering groceries, or handling complex multi-step tasks.

Additionally, Browser Memory, when enabled, allows ChatGPT to remember important details from the user's web browsing to improve chat responses and offer smarter suggestions.

Privacy and User Control Safety

OpenAI says that users have full control over their privacy settings, including what information the browser remembers and how that data is used.

By default, Atlas users will automatically opt out of having their browsing data used to train ChatGPT models, ensuring that personal information remains protected.

For greater flexibility, users can easily clear their browsing and web history at any time.

An incognito mode is also available, allowing users to browse the internet without storing chat history or memories.

Additionally, the newly introduced parental controls for ChatGPT also work in Atlas, with options to disable browser memory and agent mode, providing parents with peace of mind.

While Agent Mode offers powerful automation capabilities, OpenAI has implemented strict security restrictions.

This mode cannot run code in the browser, download files, or install extensions, ensuring that automated actions remain within safe and controlled boundaries.

ChatGPT Atlas: The Main Challenger in Browser Competition?

The launch of ChatGPT Atlas directly intensifies OpenAI's competition with Google, which has long dominated the online search and browser market.

Atlas debuted as Silicon Valley races to use generative AI to transform the way people experience the internet.

Google has also announced a number of AI features for its popular Chrome browser, including a "sparkle" button that launches the Gemini chatbot.

Chrome remains the most widely used browser worldwide.

Google itself has not stood still, having integrated part of its Gemini AI model into its Chrome browser, indicating that competition in the AI-powered browser space will only intensify.

In addition to Google, other companies like Perplexity AI have also launched their own AI-powered browsers, signaling that this market is undergoing a major transformation.

With its unique features and deep AI integration, ChatGPT Atlas aims to become the go-to choice for users seeking a smarter and more personalized browsing experience.
