“It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven [Spielberg], Chris [Columbus], and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem, and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.”

The Gremlins Franchise: History and Future

The first "Gremlins" film, notorious for its PG-13 rating, was released in 1984 and directed by Joe Dante, with Columbus as the screenwriter.

The horror-comedy follows a boy named Billy who takes in a furry creature called a Mogwai as a pet.

Billy is warned never to expose the animal to bright light, water, or feed it after midnight.

After breaking these rules, the gremlin spawns more of its kind, ultimately wreaking havoc on Billy's hometown at Christmas.

"Gremlins" was a box office success, grossing $212 million worldwide.

Its sequel, "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," released in 1990, was less successful, grossing $41 million, but became an iconic classic.
