The cancellation came amid a wave of negative reactions from viewers and civil rights organizations, who considered the series to be rife with stereotypes.
"Good Times: Black Again" Cancellation and a Storm of Criticism
"Good Times: Black Again," an adult animated series that was a reboot of the classic 1970s sitcom, was officially canceled by Netflix in November 2025.
The series, which premiered on April 12, 2024, lasted only one season after facing widespread criticism.
Many viewers and critics considered the reboot to rely too heavily on stereotypes and to offer a "lazy" and "inaccurate" depiction of Black life.
Prominent civil rights organizations like the NAACP and the December 12th Movement even publicly condemned the show for its portrayal of Black characters, which they considered harmful.
Despite starring big names like J.B. Smoove, Marsai Martin, and Wanda Sykes, the series failed to maintain viewership.
While it briefly reached Netflix's top 10 in the US with approximately 5.4 million streams, this number was not enough to warrant a second season.
Critics also accused the producers of distorting the legacy of the original "Good Times," known for its realistic depiction of a working-class Black family, with humor and insightful social commentary.
Other Adult Animated Series Cancelled
In addition to "Good Times: Black Again," Netflix also canceled other adult animated series at the end of 2025.
Two titles that were also halted were "Exploding Kittens" and "Twilight of the Gods."
"Exploding Kittens," an adaptation of the popular card game, was canceled after just one season.
Similarly, "Twilight of the Gods," the epic Norse mythology series directed by Zack Snyder, will also not be continuing for a second season.
Netflix Cancellation Throughout 2025
The decision to cancel this controversial series is not new for Netflix.
Throughout 2025, several other series have suffered similar fates.
In May 2025, "The Lady's Companion," a period drama from Netflix Spain, was canceled due to underperformance.
Meanwhile, "Kaala Paani," an Indian thriller, was canceled despite previously being announced for a second season, due to undisclosed behind-the-scenes issues.
Other canceled series include "The Recruit," starring Noah Centineo, due to low viewership following its second season premiere.
The medical drama "Pulse" and the comedy thriller "The Residence" were also canceled after one season, despite both having entered Netflix's top 10 and having strong initial ratings.
The situation with "Fachadas" also remains unclear, with no immediate renewal plans from Netflix.
