Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Author Robert Munsch has delighted children around the world for decades with his books and stories.

Now, the 80-year-old author tells his fans that dozens of new stories are in the works.

He shared the news in a recent interview with CBC News chief correspondent Adrienne Arsenault at his home in Guelph, Ontario.

His plan is for about one book a year to be edited and illustrated after he's gone.

“Nobody lives forever," he said. “But I will at least have a couple of years, as many years as I’ve already had [after I’m gone], and that will be nice."

 


Robert Munsch's Upcoming Books Promise

In a recent interview with the New York Times, published in September, Munsch revealed that he has been approved for medical assistance in dying (MAID) when the time is right.

He has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and dementia, which he says he is managing, although it has taken a heavy toll.

“I tell people I'm fine. I'm not fine,” he said. “I fall down, I forget words.... I can't walk more than two blocks."

Although he has stopped writing due to his health, Munsch once stated that he has written many children's books that will be released after his death, and he believes the stories he told will be the last thing he loses.

Robert Munsch Profile: Iconic Children's Author

Robert Norman Munsch is an American-born Canadian children's author who has become widely known for his humorous and imaginative stories. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 11, 1945, he was the fourth of nine children.

Before entering the world of writing, Munsch earned a B.A. in history from Fordham University in 1969 and then an M.A. in anthropology from Boston University in 1971.

He also earned a Master of Education in Child Studies from Tufts University in 1973, which also led him to study for the Jesuit priesthood for seven years and work in an orphanage.

Munsch became a Canadian citizen in 1983, a country that has been home for most of his career.


Phenomenal Writing Style, Awards, and Challenging Life

In 1975, Robert Munsch moved to Canada to work in the Family Studies department at the University of Guelph, Ontario, where he also taught at the university preschool until 1984.

His first book, Mud Puddle, published in 1979, marked the beginning of his illustrious writing career.

Robert Munsch is known for his lively storytelling, using exaggerated expressions and voice acting, making each story-telling session an unforgettable experience.

Some of his most famous books include Love You Forever (1986), which has sold over 30 million copies, and The Paper Bag Princess (1980), a favorite of many readers.

In 1985, he won a Juno Award for his recording of Murmel, Murmel, Munsch: More Outrageous Stories.

He was also named "Author of the Year" by the Canadian Booksellers' Association in 1992 and was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1999.

In 2009, Robert Munsch received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame, cementing his position as an icon of children's literature.

However, despite this success, Munsch also faced significant health challenges.He suffered a stroke in 2008 that impaired his speech and memory.

In 2021, he revealed a diagnosis of dementia, followed by a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Munsch has also openly discussed his struggles with alcohol and cocaine addiction, as well as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and bipolar disorder.
