How the Tumbler Ridge School Shooting Happened
The school shooting incident began on February 10, 2026, at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time, when the Tumbler Ridge RCMP received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
Officers from the Tumbler Ridge RCMP and surrounding detachments immediately responded to the call, with local officers arriving on the scene within two minutes.
Within minutes, officers entered the school and found an individual identified as the shooter dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A search of the school revealed six victims, while another victim died en route to the hospital.
Two additional victims were also found dead at a nearby home, suspected to be connected to the shooting incident.
After the situation was deemed safe, more than 100 students and staff were evacuated to a nearby community center.
Identification of Victims and Perpetrator
The victims killed in this school shooting include a 39-year-old female educator, three 12-year-old female students, and two 12- and 13-year-old male students found at the school.
Meanwhile, two other victims found at a local residence were the perpetrator's 39-year-old mother and her 11-year-old half-brother.
More than 25 other people were injured in the shooting rampage.
Two were airlifted to the hospital for life-threatening injuries, while approximately 25 others received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
The perpetrator was identified as Jesse Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old resident of Tumbler Ridge.
Authorities revealed that Van Rootselaar had a history of mental health-related calls to her home.
The suspect dropped out of the school four years ago.
When asked if the suspect faced bullying "because of the transition from male to female", according to BBC.
Two firearms, a long rifle and a modified pistol, were recovered at the scene.

Canada PM Mark Carney stated that he was "devastated" by the shooting and called for flags to be flown at half-staff for seven days as a mark of national mourning.
Nina Krieger, British Columbia's Minister of Public Safety, described the incident as an "unimaginable tragedy" and "one of the worst mass shootings in the history of our province and our country.
"The community of Tumbler Ridge, with a population of approximately 2,400, was devastated by the incident. Mayor Darryl Krakowka stated that "this community is in mourning. This is a huge tragedy; we are one big family here."
As an immediate response, Tumbler Ridge Secondary School will be closed for the remainder of the week.
Additionally, counseling services will be provided to students, staff, and community members who need psychological support to cope with the trauma of this school shooting.
