Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Toyota announced another recall of a large number of its vehicles in the United States and Canada in February 2026 as response to a potential safety issue that could endanger drivers and passengers.
This recall involves popular models such as the Toyota Prius and Prius Prime.

More than 141,000 Toyota vehicles in the US and nearly 20,000 in Canada are affected by this recall.
Specifically, the models included in the Toyota recall are the 2023-2026 Toyota Prius, the 2023-2024 Toyota Prius Prime, and the 2025-2026 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid.
The primary cause of this recall is the potential for the rear doors of the vehicles to open unexpectedly while the vehicle is moving.
Problem Details Affected Models
This recall specifically targets several variants of the popular Prius line, known for its fuel efficiency.
Affected models include the 2023 to 2026 Toyota Prius, the 2023-2024 Toyota Prius Prime, and the 2025-2026 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, as reported by IBT Times UK.
The total number of recalled units is 141,286 in the United States and nearly 20,000 in Canada due to a malfunction in the electric tailgate lock system.
Investigations indicate that water can enter the door switch if the seal deteriorates over time, particularly from repeated exposure to hot and cold cycles.
This water ingress can then cause a short circuit in the switch.
If the short circuit occurs while the door is unlocked, there is a high risk of the tailgate opening unexpectedly while the vehicle is moving.
Toyota began investigating this issue after receiving field reports from Japan in February 2025, reporting incidents of the rear door partially opening while driving.
Toyota's Solution and Repair Steps
To address this issue, authorized Toyota dealers will modify the rear door switch circuits on both the left and right sides of the vehicle, aims to prevent unintended activation, even in the event of a short circuit in the switch, so the door remains securely closed.
This entire repair process will be provided free of charge to affected vehicle owners as part of the Toyota recall campaign.
Owners of vehicles included in this recall will receive official notification by mail.
These notifications are expected to begin mailing in March 15 or March 29, 2026.
