Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Exciting news has arrived for loyal fans of the "Firefly" science fiction franchise after acclaimed actor Nathan Fillion officially confirmed that an animated series adaptation of the iconic story is in advanced development.

He confirmed the project while attending the Awesome Con panel in Washington, D.C., a highly anticipated event for pop culture enthusiasts.

The momentous occasion was also recorded and will be part of an episode of his personal podcast, "Once We Were Spacemen," which will also feature several of his former co-stars.

The development of this animated series marks the return of the Serenity crew to the small screen, this time in a different format.

The project is expected to satisfy fans' longing for the adventures of Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew, while also introducing new stories within the rich "Firefly" universe.

Official Announcement and Nathan Fillion's Involvement

Nathan Fillion, best known for his role as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, was central to this important announcement.

He openly stated that the animated adaptation of "Firefly" was no longer just talk, but was already in serious development.

This announcement was certainly a breath of fresh air for the fan community, which had long been eagerly awaiting the continuation of the story.

The historic moment took place at Awesome Con, a consistently crowded fan convention, where Fillion shared details of the project.

His presence on the panel, alongside his longtime cast mates, added weight to the confirmation, demonstrating the cast's strong commitment to reviving their beloved franchise.

Furthermore, Fillion ensured that this announcement was more than just a verbal one.

The entire confirmation process and discussions surrounding the animated series were documented for the "Once We Were Spacemen" podcast.

Original Cast Set to Return and Production Details

One of the most exciting aspects of the "Firefly" animated series is the return of most of the original cast to voice their characters.

Nathan Fillion will return as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, joined by Alan Tudyk as Hoban "Wash" Washburne, and Gina Torres as Zoe Alleyne Washburne.

Jewel Staite will also voice Kaylee Frye, while Morena Baccarin returns as Inara Serra.Sean Maher will also return as Simon Tam, Summer Glau as River Tam, and Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb.

The involvement of this core cast ensures a familiar tone and characterization for longtime fans.

However, there is one important caveat regarding the character of Shepherd Book, played by Ron Glass, who passed away in 2016.

Behind the scenes, the project is being diligently developed by Fillion's production company, Collision33, in collaboration with 20th Television Animation, which owns the rights to the "Firefly" franchise.

Writer-producer duo Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters, who have impressive track records in the television industry, have been appointed as showrunners. The script for the series has reportedly been completed, signaling significant progress in production.

The series' visuals are also promising, as it will be animated by ShadowMachine, an Oscar- and Emmy-winning studio.

Timeline, Continuity, and Joss Whedon's Permission

The animated series "Firefly" will be strategically set between the original 2002 television series and the 2005 film "Serenity."

One major advantage of this timeline is the potential return of key characters who may not have appeared in "Serenity."

The most obvious example is the character of Wash, played by Alan Tudyk, who died in the film.

By setting the series in an earlier timeframe, Wash can rejoin the adventures of the Serenity crew, allowing fans to see more of their interactions.

Although Joss Whedon, the original creator of "Firefly," is not directly involved in the production of the animated series, Nathan Fillion confirmed that Whedon has given his "permission."

Nathan Fillion also delivered a special message to the fans, emphasizing their dedication in keeping "Firefly" relevant over the years.

Fillion also revealed on social media that 20th Century Studios/Disney, as the rights holder, is "excited" and has given their approval for the project.
