Liputan6.com, Jakarta - 4A Games and Deep Silver have officially announced the latest title in the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic survival horror game series, Metro 2039.

This announcement comes with confirmation of the Xbox First Look: Metro 2039 event, which will feature the game's global premiere.

The game marks 4A Games' fourth main entry in the franchise inspired by the novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Set in 2039, the title promises a return to the series' signature dark and eerie atmosphere, transporting players back to the heart of a devastated Moscow.

An early teaser has been released, featuring a clip of a clock stopped at 20:39, clearly hinting at the year the story is set.

Announcement Details and 'First Look' Event

The official announcement of 'Metro 2039' was made in April 2026.

The game is being developed by 4A Games, a studio renowned for creating immersive post-apocalyptic worlds, and published by Deep Silver.

To give fans a first look, a special broadcast titled 'Xbox First Look: Metro 2039' has been scheduled.

The event will take place on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. UK / 7 p.m. CEST / 8 p.m. EET.

Story Background and Gameplay

'Metro 2039' will be set in the year 2039, taking players back to the tunnels of the post-apocalyptic Moscow Metro.

Amidst the ruins of the city, survivors of a nuclear war have been locked in a protracted conflict for 25 years.

The central conflict centers on the Novoreich regime led by Hunter, a fanatical Spartan who unites the survivors.

Hunter rules through propaganda and fear, subjugating the population in the name of a new war to retake the surface from a dark and terrifying enemy.

Meanwhile, in the desert outside the city, a reclusive 'Stranger' is haunted by violent nightmares.

When the ghosts of his past force him out of exile, 'Stranger' must undertake a harrowing journey into the ruins of destroyed Moscow, to the one place he swore he would never return: the Metro.

The story is inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky's internationally bestselling Metro book trilogy.

The Metro Series' Journey and Innovation

The Metro series began in 2010 with 'Metro 2033,' followed by 'Metro: Last Light' in 2013, and 'Metro Exodus' in 2019.

In 2024, a VR game titled 'Metro Awakening' was also released, showcasing the franchise's evolution to new platforms.

4A Games confirmed in November 2020 that a new Metro game was in development, meaning 'Metro 2039' has been in the works for nearly six years.

This long development cycle could allow for a refresh of the Metro formula, as was the case with 'Metro Exodus,' which brought the action from the underground to the surface.

To celebrate the announcement of 'Metro 2039', Steam is holding a massive sale on all previous Metro games, offering 85-90% off 2014-era titles.
