Developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver, "Metro 2039" will be available on multiple platforms, including PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
This reveal generated high levels of excitement, especially as it marks the return of players to the ruined tunnels of the Moscow Metro, following the surface adventures of the previous installments.
A New Adventure in the Depths of the Moscow Metro
"Metro 2039" continues the story of Metro Exodus, set six years after the events of the original game.
While Metro Exodus takes players away from Moscow, this latest installment draws players back to the heart of the Moscow Metro's now-ruined tunnels.
Players will control a new, fully voiced protagonist known as "The Stranger," a loner haunted by violent nightmares, forcing him to return to the Metro, a place he vowed never to visit again.
The underground factions and station communities are now united under the banner of the Novoreich, led by a new Führer, a legendary Spartan named Hunter.
Hunter promises a new life on the surface, but the Novoreich's authoritarian regime and propaganda have instead brought suffering to the Metro's inhabitants.
The game's story was written in collaboration with original Metro writer Dmitry Glukhovsky.
Gameplay and Visual Innovations
"Metro 2039" gameplay will remain focused on a narrative-driven single-player campaign with strong horror elements.
One interesting innovation is the "Frozen Stories" mechanic, which replaces traditional dialogue.
Players can discover stories and narrative details by examining the environment at points of interest, with each area meticulously designed to reveal in-depth micro-narratives within the game experience.
The game is built using the enhanced 4A Games engine, with a focus on stunning visuals and improved ray-tracing implementation.
These visual enhancements will push the boundaries of video game graphics, with a redeveloped ray-tracing implementation for a more immersive experience and optimal performance.
A new particle system is also a major highlight, with radioactive ash storms on the surface of Moscow dynamically affecting visibility and contaminating gas masks in real-time.
The trailer showcases an encounter with the vicious mutant Nosalis, and introduces Shadow Stalkers, agile humanoid creatures that avoid direct light and utilize a new global illumination mechanic for stealth.
There are also Ash Mutants, creatures adapted to the new "radioactive ash storm," whose natural camouflage makes them nearly invisible during blizzards, forcing players to rely on sound.
Impact of Reality and the Deep Message
The development of "Metro 2039" was influenced by real-world events.
Developer 4A Games, primarily based in Ukraine, stated that Russia's invasion of Ukraine fundamentally changed their perspective and shaped the game's story.
Executive Producer Jon Bloch revealed that the team's entire plans for 'Metro' changed in 2020, and again in 2022 with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which significantly impacted the game's narrative direction.
The game's story is told from a Ukrainian perspective, providing emotional depth and strong relevance to current geopolitical conditions.
