Authorities immediately responded, securing the area and launching a manhunt for the perpetrators, who were suspected of being involved in a gang dispute.

Initially, up to 10 people were reported injured, but that number was later revised to one fatality and five others injured.

This incident was not a random attack, but is believed to have stemmed from an exchange of gunfire between two rival gangs inside the shopping center, according to Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr.

“This was not a random act. This was a disagreement, a fight between two different groups of people that we are still trying to unravel,” Morse said. “And unfortunately, innocent victims got caught in the crossfire.”

The Mall of Louisiana was completely closed.

Although the primary shooters remain at large, Police Chief TJ Morse assured the public that there is no further threat at this time.

The Baton Rouge Police Department is also asking the public for information or video footage by calling Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867.

Mayor-President Sid Edwards immediately arrived at the scene and expressed his deep concern over the violence at the Mall of Louisiana.

He commended the swift response of police and called for prayers for the victims and their families.

Governor Jeff Landry also actively coordinated with law enforcement, asking the public to avoid the area and thanking them for their swift response.

Attorney General Liz Murrill has been in contact with District Attorney Hillar Moore, confirming that the shooting stemmed from a clash between two groups.

Mall spokesperson Lindsay Kahn also stated that it was a "terrifying day" for everyone present, reflecting the profound emotional impact of the incident in Louisiana.
