Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Anna Maria College, a private institution in Paxton, Massachusetts, announced the surprising decision to cease all academic operations at the end of the Spring 2026 semester.

The college's full closure is expected to happened by the end of the 2026 calendar year.

The announcement, made on April 23, 2026, marks the end of the institution, founded in 1946.

This drastic decision comes after months of in-depth evaluation and years of struggling with serious financial pressures.

The college has struggled with structural challenges common to many small private institutions, particularly in the Northeastern United States.

"It is with profound grief that we write today to tell you that Anna Maria will cease academic operations at the end of our Spring 2026 Semester," president Sean Ryan and the Board of Trustees said in a statement.

Institutional Closure Schedule and Reasons

Anna Maria College will cease academic activities at the end of the Spring 2026 semester, with senior commencement ceremonies scheduled for May 9th.

The college is expected to close completely by the end of the 2026 calendar year, ending its 80-year history in Massachusetts.

The closure is driven by long-term, insurmountable financial pressures, exacerbated by a decline in the traditional college-age student population and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on enrollment and finances.

Between 2019 and 2024, Anna Maria's student population decreased significantly by 16.6%, to 1,202 students.

The fiscal year 2025 financial audit indicated substantial doubt about the college's ability to continue operating, qualifying it as "going concern."

"The decision reflects years of financial pressure that we were ultimately unable to overcome, and the honest recognition that continuing would not be responsible to the students, faculty, and staff who depend on us," the college said.

"We tried to find a way. We are grateful to everyone who tried alongside us. And we are deeply, genuinely sorry we found no viable path forward."

Failed Efforts

Prior to the closure decision, Anna Maria College had taken various steps to alleviate the "serious financial pressures" it was facing.

These efforts included staff reductions and operating cost cuts of more than $2 million, as well as resetting enrollment targets and seeking new revenue streams.

The college was also actively seeking new revenue streams and fundraising, including receiving an anonymous $5.3 million donation that was expected to provide short-term liquidity.

Enrollment indicators for Fall 2026 also showed positive movement, offering a glimmer of hope.

While there were signs of improvement, such as a 7.5% increase in spring enrollment and stronger-than-expected fundraising, a recent audit raised significant concerns.

Impact and Solutions for Students

Anna Maria College's closure has had a significant impact on thousands of students, but the college has established a transition path.

Seniors who will graduate in Spring 2026 will be able to complete their degrees and participate in the commencement ceremony scheduled for May 9.

For students in prior years, Anna Maria College will provide a transfer pathway through a teach-out agreement with a partner institution.

Students planning to begin at Anna Maria this fall will also receive a full refund of their deposit.

Worcester State University will guarantee academic transfer for current Anna Maria students.

They will also guarantee admission and housing for qualified Anna Maria students and welcome student-athletes.

Regis College also announced a partnership that includes a teach-out plan, transfer pathway, and student support services.

Additionally, Bay Path University is offering Anna Maria students a clear pathway to degree completion through a formal teach-out agreement, with a seamless academic transition, honored tuition and aid, accelerated admission, and personalized support for impacted students in Massachusetts.
