Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Retro gaming fans around the world are gearing up for the arrival of Mina the Hollower, a highly anticipated action-adventure game from the developer behind the Shovel Knight series, Yacht Club Games.

Scheduled for release on May 29, 2026, the game has attracted widespread attention thanks to its authentic 8-bit visual style and innovative mix of genres.

The game will be available on multiple platforms, including PC (Windows, Linux, macOS), Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, promising an immersive gaming experience for many players.

Even though it was originally planned to be released on October 31, 2025, the delay to May 2026 did not reduce enthusiasm, in fact it built higher expectations.

Gothic Horror Adventure

Mina the Hollower was designed to emulate the visual look of the Game Boy Color titles, a stylistic decision made since the game was still a side project.

This authentic 8-bit aesthetic is enriched with modern touches, such as detailed animations, widescreen visuals, and solid controls, creating a blend of nostalgia and innovation.

In terms of gameplay, this game takes inspiration from various legendary titles.

The 3/4 isometric perspective and open world structure are reminiscent of the classic games The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and the Oracle of Seasons/Ages series.

Meanwhile, the gothic horror atmosphere and challenging difficulty levels, complete with a "bone" system as currency or experience, are clearly inspired by Castlevania and games a la Bloodborne or Dark Souls.

In-Depth Storyline and Game Mechanics

The setting of Mina the Hollower is a 1700s gothic horror world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals.

Players control Mina, a genius inventor in the form of a mouse and member of the “Hollower” guild dedicated to studying Earth.

Mina embarks on an expedition to Tenebrous Isle, a cursed island, to save the island after the Spark generator she created begins to fail and monsters flood the island.

She must face Thorne, a bat who betrayed Baron Lionel, Mina's protector, and destroyed the generator.

Mina uses a whip called Nightstar as her main weapon, which allows attacks in four directions.

Her unique ability is “Hollowing,” a technique that allows him to burrow underground for a short time, grants invincibility, and is used to traverse gaps or dodge attacks.

Players can also equip various sidearms such as axes and daggers, as well as trinkets that provide permanent improvements to their navigation and combat abilities.

The game also has a full level-up system that allows players to develop Mina according to their playing style.

The game world is described as vast, dense, and interconnected, with dozens of different regions, more than 25 bosses and mini-bosses, plenty of secrets to discover and puzzles to solve.

Critical Review and Confessions of Mina the Hollower

As of May 2026, Mina the Hollower has received widespread critical acclaim, with many reviews describing it as a masterpiece and one of the best games of the year.

This game was even called an “instant classic” and managed to achieve the highest Metacritic score of 2026 so far, surpassing the original Shovel Knight.

Critics highly appreciated the brilliant mix of genres, which managed to combine elements of classic The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, and FromSoftware-style RPGs into a unique and fresh experience.

Challenging yet satisfying gameplay, with “Hollowing” mechanics and the use of side weapons, provides constant tactical choices in combat.

The detailed, beautiful and interconnected world and level design is also a major highlight.

Stunning retro visuals and audio, with stunning pixel art and catchy chiptune, manage to create an atmosphere that is as lively and nostalgic as it is modern.

Mina's customization capabilities through trinkets, sidearms, and a level-up system, as well as gameplay modifiers, allow players to find their own playing style.
