Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Malta was experienced a massive explosion that destroyed a fireworks factory in Naxxar on Sunday, June 1, 2026.

The incident happened at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time in Triq tal-Qadi, Naxxar, and caused significant damage to the surrounding area.

The fireworks factory that exploded was reportedly operated by the Peace Band Club in Naxxar.

The explosion occurred one day after the announcement of the general election results in Malta, adding to the already tense atmosphere in the island nation.

The incident caused panic among residents, with thick smoke billowing from several locations across Malta.

Impact of the Massive Explosion in Malta

The thick smoke from the explosion was clearly visible from across Malta, indicating the scale of the destruction.

Initial reports indicated extensive property damage in the surrounding area.

Several buildings in the immediate area suffered structural damage due to the immense force of the explosion.

Residents in various parts of northern Malta reported hearing a series of loud explosions that shook them early in the morning.

The force of the explosion caused the ground to shake, and several residents reported shattered windows on their properties.

Furthermore, farmers in the area surrounding the plant reported significant damage to their farms, including structural damage, loss of livestock, and serious impacts on animals exposed to the force and pressure of the blast.

Rescue Process and Victims' Condition

Despite the magnitude of the explosion, police confirmed that no licensed workers were present at the plant site at the time of the incident.

This was a crucial factor in preventing any casualties within the plant.

Two men, aged 67 and 47, who were in a field near the plant when the explosion occurred, were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital.

Both were treated for shock and sustained minor injuries, indicating the psychological and physical impact of the incident.

The Armed Forces of Malta's bomb disposal unit and medical teams were immediately deployed to the scene to secure the area and provide assistance.

Another farmer working nearby also received medical assistance after suffering shock from the incident.

Incident Investigation

An in-depth investigation is underway in collaboration with the Civil Protection Department to establish the full details of this case.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud is responsible for leading the investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Roads around the blast site were completely closed to traffic to allow members of the Civil Protection Department and other emergency services to secure the area and manage further risks.

Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed his concern on social media, stating that his "thoughts are with those affected by the explosion that happened  this morning."
