Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Kameirah Johnson, an 18-year-old senior from Lakeside School in the Seattle area, has captured the digital world's attention after being named the national winner of the 2026 Doodle for Google contest.

Her work, "Hair Power: The Crown That Grows From Us," now graces the Google search engine homepage, celebrating the beauty and power of cultural heritage through art.

The winning doodle features three girls with their hair styled to spell the word "Google."

Kameirah explained that the work depicts herself, her mother, and her sister, Kalieyah, lying in the grass with their hair resembling a crown.

Inspiration Behind the Work

Revealing the inspiration behind her work, Kameirah stated, "My superpower is my hair, and the family history it carries."

She added that every hair texture and style carries with it a legacy of culture, care, and survival that is passed down through generations without the need for words.

"My Doodle, 'Hair Power: The Crown That Grows From Us,' was inspired by the idea that our differences can be our greatest strengths," she said.

"Growing up, I saw how Black hair could be a source of creativity, identity, culture and self-expression."

Through her art, Kameirah seeks to celebrate the beauty of Black hair and the culture it encompasses, viewing it as a living, ever-growing force, connecting individuals to their heritage, imagination, and sense of self.

Aas a Black artist, she learned that "the things that make us different are often the things that make us strong."

This message aligns with the theme of the 2026 Doodle for Google contest, "My superpower is...", which encouraged K-12 students across the United States to share what makes them special and showcase their unique talents through art.

$55,000 Award

In recognition of her achievement, Kameirah Johnson received a $55,000 college scholarship.

Additionally, Lakeside School, her Seattle school, received a $50,000 technology package.

Her Doodle was displayed on the Google homepage for an entire day, and she also received Google hardware and promotional merchandise.

The Doodle for Google winner selection process involved tens of thousands of entries from K-12 students across the US.

Of those, five national finalists, including Kameirah Johnson, were selected in April.

The national winner was then determined through a public vote that ran from April 16 to April 29, with Kameirah's Doodle receiving the most votes.

Guest judges for the contest included NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo and Ashlie Crosson, the 2025 National Teacher of the Year.

The Doodle Featured on the Google Homage

Kameirah was informed of her win during an appearance on the TODAY Show in New York on June 4, 2026.

On the same date, the "Hair Power: The Crown That Grows From Us" Doodle was officially featured on the Google homepage, marking the culmination of her creative journey.

Google, by featuring this Doodle, is participating in promoting inclusivity and diversity, demonstrating that art can be a bridge to understanding and celebrating differences.

Kameirah's story is living proof that talent and a genuine message can reach a wide audience, inspire change, and encourage dialogue about the importance of self-acceptance and cultural heritage.
