The announcement, made via Instagram Stories, X (formerly Twitter), and a video on Jesse's personal YouTube channel, immediately sparked heated debate online, dividing public opinion between support and strong condemnation.
“The choice was not made lightly,” said Jesse Ridgway, explaining that the experience was “very traumatic” for both of them, especially Ashley, who had undergone a pregnancy termination procedure earlier that week.

The Pregnancy Journey and Early Reveal
The couple first shared the happy news of their first pregnancy on March 29, 2026, via Instagram, with the caption “BABY RIDGWAY – COMING FALL 2026” along with photos of an ultrasound.
However, less than a month later, their joy turned to worry.
Genetic testing revealed that their baby had a “95% chance of being born with Down Syndrome.”
Initially, they hoped this result was just a “fluke” and that a subsequent amniocentesis would confirm that their baby boy would be born without any health issues.
However, the amniocentesis confirmed the diagnosis of Trisomy 21.
Jesse Ridgway stated that this diagnosis changed their entire plan and left them deeply saddened.
The Decision of Termination
Jesse Ridgway admitted that while initially optimistic about raising a child with the condition, she realized she didn’t fully understand the implications of Down Syndrome.
After learning more about the condition, including its impact on affected children, and reading personal stories from fans, the couple decided not to continue the pregnancy.
She highlighted the various health issues associated with Down Syndrome, such as heart defects (in 50% of babies), hearing challenges (75%), vision problems (more than 50%), impaired immune function, and learning and developmental delays.
Jesse also mentioned that many children with the condition may require full-time care throughout their lives.
He also highlighted the nearly 50% risk of miscarriage and the potential health risks for Ashley. Jesse Ridgway believes that this decision, while difficult, will be “beneficial for their family in the long run.”
Support and Backlash
Jesse said his and Ashley's private messages (DMs) have been flooded not only with messages of support, but also dozens of confessions from strangers who have gone through similar experiences.
And while those messages of support feel "validating," Jesse said the couple has received a “tremendous amount of death threats. People saying we’re murderers.”
According to the National Institutes of Health, about 6,000 babies are born in the US each year with the condition, affecting about 1 in every 700 babies.
“[W]ith appropriate support and treatment, many people with Down syndrome lead happy, productive lives,” the agency notes, but there are often significant lifelong health challenges and risks.”
According to Healthline, nearly 100% of women in Iceland who test positive for Down syndrome terminate their pregnancies. In Denmark, 98% of pregnancies are terminated, in France 77%, and in the United States 67%.
