Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Six people were reportedly injured in a stabbing incident that occurred at Penn Station in New York on Sunday evening, June 7, 2026.

This random act of violence happened around 7:00 PM local time in one of the busiest transportation hubs in the United States, located directly below Madison Square Garden.

The stabbing incident comes as the city steps up security measures ahead of US President Donald Trump's visit on Monday to watch the New York Knicks in the National Basketball Association (NBA) finals.

NYC Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, send his condolence by saying: "My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery."

Victims of the Incident

The New York Fire Department (FDNY) initially reported five victims, but Mayor Zohran Mamdani later confirmed that six people had been stabbed.

Of those, paramedics found one victim with serious injuries, two with moderate injuries, and the remaining victims with minor injuries.

All victims are expected to survive the incident.

Five victims were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, while the other victim was taken to Cornell Hospital or a separate medical facility for treatment.

The Suspect Background and Motive

A suspect has been apprehended and is currently in custody.

Video footage shows at least four Amtrak Police officers making the arrest at the scene.

An eyewitness, Michael Christian, reported that officers used pepper spray before taking the suspect down.

Police sources described the suspect as emotionally disturbed and not associated with terrorism.

City Supervisor Mark Levine also stated via X-Platform that the suspect was described as homeless and emotionally disturbed.

Michael Christian added that he had seen the suspect before, who was “screaming, moving his head,” but did not expect such violence.

Several law enforcement and emergency services agencies, including Amtrak Police, the FDNY, and the New York Police Department (NYPD), immediately responded to the incident.

Police issued an advisory for the public to avoid the area due to expected traffic delays, road closures, and mass transit disruptions.

It Happened Before Game 3 NBA Finals

The stabbing incident occurred a day before Game 3 of the highly anticipated NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, an event expected to draw a large crowd.

President Donald Trump is also scheduled to attend the game, which has prompted increased security measures around the arena and surrounding blocks, involving the Secret Service, NYPD, and various other agencies.

However, authorities have not indicated whether the stabbing incident will affect security plans already in place for the game.

After the chaos subsided, Penn Station returned to its usual scene, with travelers carrying luggage through a roped-off area near Tracks 5 and 6, where medical gloves, used bandages, and traces of blood were still visible on the floor.
