Liputan6.com, Jakarta - A bungee jumper in Brazil suffered a fatal accident, killing a 21-year-old woman, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, after her main safety harness was improperly secured, causing her to fall tens of meters.

The tragic incident happened on Saturday, June 13, 2026, on the Skeleton Bridge (Ponte do Esqueleto) in Limeira, São Paulo state.

Shortly before her jump, Maria Eduarda posted a question on her personal Instagram account, "Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?", O Globo reported.

The post also featured a photo of a participant's ID bracelet and a banner from the organizing company, "Entre Cordas."

“According to the police report, at the time of the jump, the safety equipment was not properly fixed,” the governor’s office said in a statement.

“The victim did not resist the fall and death was confirmed by SAMU (Serviço de Atendimento Móvel de Urgência, or emergency medical service) teams.”

Tragic Moments on the Skeleton Bridge

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas died after jumping from a height of approximately 40 meters without a properly secured safety harness.

Police stated that the safety equipment was not properly installed during the jump, allowing the victim to slide freely.

Witnesses reported that the organizing crew did not secure the main safety harness to the victim.

Videos circulating on social media show the crucial moments before the jump, where two men are seen lifting and unhooking the victim from the bridge.

After Maria Eduarda's jump, panicked screams were heard from bystanders who realized that the main safety harness was not secured to her.

Medical and rescue teams who arrived at the scene were unable to revive Maria Eduarda, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

This incident highlighted the safety practices of the company "Entre Cordas," although previous videos from the same company showed participants using thick safety harnesses around their waists during the launch.

Investigation and Legal Liability

Following this fatal incident, police have detained individuals involved in the bungee jump.

Some sources reported that three officers were detained, while others reported that six people—five men and one woman—were detained.

The men were arrested “in flagrante,” or caught red-handed, on charges of murder with intent to kill. Under Brazilian law, this charge applies to cases where the perpetrator did not intend to kill but committed a dangerous act that carried a risk of death.

The investigation into this accident is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the incident and to determine legal responsibility.

“Investigations continue to determine the circumstances and possible responsibilities,” the governor’s office said.
