Krypto Scene Removed from Superman 2025 Due to Criticism

The decision to cut the scene was made after getting a very bad response during the test screening.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Superman 2025 is rumored to have cut the Krypto scene so that it does not appear on the big screen. The decision to cut the scene was made after getting a very bad response during the test screening.

Krypto is a superpowered dog who, in comics and several adaptations, is depicted as a white Labrador; however, the 2025 version is based on director and writer James Gunn's dog, Ozu.

When he appeared in the first teaser trailer in December 2024, Krypto immediately caught the attention of many people. He is shown adorably helping Superman (David Corenswet).

In the movie, the white dog also plays a significant role in Superman's mission to save the world, particularly when confronting his nemesis, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).

Animal abuse

However, the stars of Superman admitted that the Krypto scene was eventually deleted. The scene is said to be related to violence against animals.

In an interview with Jake's Take, as reported by Screen Rant on July 2, Sara Sampaio and María Gabriela de Faría, who play Eve Teschmacher and Angela Spica, revealed the deleted scene.

Sampaio said the scene featured Ultraman attacking the dog during a fight. He said the scene “apparently” rated “very poorly” with the audience.

“Me and Nick [Hoult] were a little upset about it,” Sampaio said.

"That's not okay. You can't hit a dog. Okay, I didn't hit the dog, the dog attacked me first," de Faría said, referring to the scene.

The scene was eventually deleted and did not appear in the final version shown on the big screen.

Creative process

James Gunn, co-CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios, revealed that the creative process of depicting Krypto in the movie was based on his own dog, Ozu, who was adopted shortly after Gunn began writing the script for Superman.

“Ozu came from a backyard hoarding with 60 other dogs and never knew a human, very troubled,” Gunn wrote on Instagram.

“He came right in and destroyed our house, our shoes, our furniture - he even ate my laptop.”

"I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how hard would life be if Ozu had superpowers?' - and so Krypto came into the script and changed the storyline the way Ozu changed my life," the filmmaker added.

The movie shows David Corenswet's character having to balance his responsibilities as Clark Kent and the superhero, Superman.

James Gunn wrote the Superman story with a different approach from previous releases. He tells a story set in a world that already knows the existence of Superman, no longer telling the story from the beginning of Kal-El's arrival on Earth.

This makes Superman widely known to citizens, and Clark Kent and Lois Lane are acquainted, while Lex Luthor hates Superman's presence, even though they are not acquainted.
