Liputan6.com, Jakarta Kendrick Lamar's popularity is entering a different stage. The Californian rap star is rumored to be the subject of a course at a university in the United States.

According to a report by NBC10, Temple University, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is offering the course "Kendrick Lamar and the Morals of M.A.A.D City" available to all students for the Fall 2025 semester.

The course will be taught by Timothy Welbeck, a professor in the Department of Africology and African-American Studies and Director of the Anti-Racism Center at Temple University.

Welbeck has previously taught classes based on the works of Tupac Shakur, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z, and Kendrick's course has been in the works for the past year.

"Kendrick Lamar is one of the defining voices of his generation. And in many ways, both his art and his life reflect the Black experience in powerful ways," Welbeck said.

Black actualization

The professor believes that the 38-year-old rapper's journey of self-actualization relates to the Black experience.

“My current department chair was very open to the idea and embraced it immediately,” Welbeck says.

“In many ways, our department-at Temple specifically, and Temple more broadly-has embraced hip-hop studies in the academic space.”

For your information, Lamar made history with his Super Bowl Halftime Show performance earlier this year. He was accompanied by SZA and denounced Drake's lawsuit against Universal Music Group.

Currently, Kendrick Lamar and SZA are on a joint tour, "Grand National", where the North American leg has been completed and continues to Europe.
