"Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley Lyrics

We're no strangers to love

You know the rules and so do I

A full commitment's what I'm thinkin' of

You wouldn't get this from any other guy

I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling

Gotta make you understand

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down

Never gonna run around and desert you

Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye

Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

We've known each other for so long

Your heart's been aching, but you're too shy to say it

Inside, we both know what's been going on

We know the game and we're gonna play it

And if you ask me how I'm feeling

Don't tell me you're too blind to see

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down

Never gonna run around and desert you

Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye

Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down

Never gonna run around and desert you

Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye

Never gonna tell a lie and hurt youWe've known each other for so long

Your heart's been aching, but you're too shy to say it

Inside, we both know what's been going on

We know the game and we're gonna play it

I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling

Gotta make you understand

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down

Never gonna run around and desert you

Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye

Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down

Never gonna run around and desert you

Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye

Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down

Never gonna run around and desert you

Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye

Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

The Popularity of This Song as a 'Rickrolling' Meme

The meme originated from a similar bait-and-switch trick called "duck rolling" that was popular on the website 4chan in 2006.

This bait-and-switch video trick became popular on 4chan in 2007 during April Fools' Day and spread to other internet sites later that year.

In March 2007, the first trailer for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV was released on the Rockstar Games website.

The number of views was so high that the Rockstar site crashed.

Several users helped upload mirrors of the video on various sites, but a user on 4chan, Shawn Cotter, linked to the video "Never Gonna Give You Up" claiming to be the trailer, misleading many readers.

The meme gained public attention in 2008 through several publicized events, most notably when YouTube used it during the 2008 April Fools' Day event.

In fact, many internet users still use this method as a prank to this day, especially when someone's asking for a link.
