Silksong's Initial Announcement and Evolution

Hollow Knight: Silksong was first officially announced on February 14, 2019, via a trailer and developer diary video that shared a wealth of early information.

Initially, the project was planned as downloadable content (DLC) for the highly successful Hollow Knight.

Due to the massive expansion, Team Cherry decided to develop Silksong into a full-fledged standalone sequel.

In Silksong, players will control Hornet, the guardian princess of Hallownest and a supporting character from the previous game.

Hornet will explore a new land called Pharloom, a world full of mysteries and challenges.

Early gameplay reveals that Silksong will feature an expanded combat system based on Hornet's acrobatic skills.

Unlike The Knight, Hornet can heal instantly, offering a faster-paced combat dynamic.

The game will also be quite large, with at least 165 new enemies and over 100 save points, significantly more than its predecessor.

Furthermore, a "Silk Soul" difficulty mode with permanent death will add a challenge for veteran players.

Revealing the Reasons for the Delay and New Features

Along with the release date announcement, a Bloomberg interview with Ari Gibson and William Pellen of Team Cherry was also released on August 21, 2025.

Gibson and Pellen emphasized that the lengthy development was not due to internal issues or "development hell," but rather to the game's ever-expanding scope.

"I remember at some point I just had to stop sketching," says Team Cherry co-founder Ari Gibson, referencing his work crafting concept art for the game.

"Because I went, 'Everything I’m drawing here has to end up in the game. That’s a cool idea, that’s in. That’s a cool idea, that’s in.' You realize, 'If I don’t stop drawing, this is going to take 15 years to finish.'"

The financial freedom gained from Hollow Knight's highly successful sales allowed Team Cherry to take the time they needed.

They wanted to ensure that Silksong was a truly high-quality and ambitious sequel.

In the August 2025 update, several new gameplay features were also confirmed.

One of these was the addition of multiple hub cities, unlike Hollow Knight's single hub city (Dirtmouth).

In these cities, Hornet can meet new NPCs, access vendors, and engage in various town activities.

The August 20, 2025 release trailer briefly showcased a "Crafting Kit" that allows Hornet to create "finer, sharper, and deadlier tools."
