The accident occurred on Interstate 90 (New York State Thruway) near Pembroke, New York, approximately 30 miles east of Buffalo, as reported by CBS.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the bus driver lost control after becoming distracted, causing the bus to veer off the road and overturn.

The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time while the bus was traveling at full speed.

More than 40 passengers were evaluated and treated at various hospitals, with some requiring intensive care.

The bus was returning to New York City after taking tourists to visit Niagara Falls.

The route was Interstate 90 (New York State Thruway), and the incident occurred near Pembroke, New York.

"For unknown reasons, the vehicle lost control, went into the median, over-corrected and ended up in the ditch" on the side of the road, state Trooper James O'Callaghan said. The bus was going full speed, but did not hit any other vehicle, he said.

The exact location of the accident was approximately 30 miles (48 km) east of Buffalo, or approximately 40 km (25 mi) east of Buffalo.

The bus was carrying a total of 54 passengers, including two employees of the bus company M&Y Tour Inc., which operated the tour.

Victim Impact and Rapid Medical Response

The Niagara Falls bus crash resulted in the deaths of five adults at the scene.

Although initial reports of child casualties were reported, further investigation confirmed that all the fatalities were adults.

In addition to the fatalities, more than 40 passengers suffered injuries of varying severity, ranging from head trauma to broken bones.

Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) in Buffalo admitted 24 patients, while other hospitals, including United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia and the University of Rochester Medical Center, also admitted patients.

"Please avoid all local roads near the scene as traffic is being diverted off of the Thruway (Interstate 90) in both directions," Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said on social media.

Cause of the Accident and Further Investigation

The initial investigation into the Niagara Falls bus crash indicates that the driver became distracted, lost control, and overcorrected.

This caused the bus to veer off the road and overturn.

Police stated that the bus was traveling at full speed at the time of the accident.

The investigation has ruled out mechanical failure or driver impairment, such as intoxication, as causes of the accident.

The bus driver survived the incident and has fully cooperated with police.

To date, no formal charges have been filed against the driver.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed on "the tragic tour bus accident" on the thruway. 

"My team is coordinating closely with @nyspolice and local officials who are working to rescue and provide assistance to everyone involved," she wrote on X.
