Details of the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League Format

Starting in the 2024/2025 season, the UEFA Champions League officially abandoned its traditional group stage format of eight groups of four teams.

Instead, the competition adopted a single league format involving 36 teams, up from the previous 32.

In this new format, each team will play eight matches in the league stage, with four home and four away matches, against eight different opponents.

All 36 teams will be ranked in a single league table, creating tighter competition from the outset.The top eight teams in the final league stage will advance directly to the round of 16.

Meanwhile, the teams finishing 9th to 24th will compete in a two-legged playoff for the remaining eight places in the round of 16.

Teams finishing 25th or lower will be automatically eliminated from all European competitions.
