Rivian R2 Ready to Launch: Everything You Need to Know About This Electric SUV

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian is preparing to launch its latest model, the Rivian R2, a mid-size electric SUV designed for the global market.

The vehicle is positioned as a more compact and affordable alternative to the existing R1S model, offering five passengers across two rows of seating.

The launch of the R2 marks Rivian's strategic move to expand its market reach into Europe and regions beyond North America.

The Rivian R2 was officially unveiled on March 7, 2024, alongside the smaller R3 compact SUV, capturing the attention of automotive enthusiasts worldwide.

The company plans to begin production of customer units of the R2 in spring 2026, with initial deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2026.

The Rivian R2 will be available in several powertrain configurations, including a single-motor rear-wheel drive, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and triple-motor all-wheel drive, providing flexibility for customers.

The first variant to be launched will be the Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive configuration.

Prototypes of the Dual Motor R2 have demonstrated 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.

The R2's battery system has also undergone significant improvements, using LG Energy Solution 4695 cylindrical cells.

This new battery format offers greater energy density and improved thermal management than the 2170 cells used in the R1.

With a diameter of 46 mm and a height of 95 mm, these cells are claimed to deliver more than six times the energy capacity per cell, contributing to longer range.

The variant tested by the media had a battery capacity of 87.4 kWh.

Rivian R2 is estimated to have a range of over 300 miles (480 km) on a single charge for the single-motor variant with a large battery pack.

For charging, the R2 will be the first vehicle in Rivian's lineup to support the North American Charging System (NACS), with the charging port relocated to the rear driver's side.

The vehicle is expected to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes using DC fast charging (DCFC), ensuring convenience on long trips.

In terms of dimensions, the Rivian R2 is 186 inches (472 cm) long, making it approximately 15 inches (38 cm) shorter than the Rivian R1S.

This size difference contributes to its lighter weight, with the R2 estimated to be over 2,000 pounds lighter than the R1S.

The R2 also boasts a ground clearance of 9.7 inches (approximately 24.6 cm), as well as a 25-degree approach and 26-degree departure angle.

The interior of the Rivian R2 follows the design theme of larger Rivian models, featuring an intuitive and modern 15.6-inch center infotainment screen.

One unique feature is the R2's roll-down rear window, providing a more open driving experience.

Technologically, the Rivian R2 will be powered by Rivian's new in-house silicon chip, significantly enhancing its software capabilities.

Combined with LiDAR sensors, this technology paves the way for Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, placing the R2 at the forefront of electric vehicle innovation.

According to Car and Driver, the R2's starting price will be around $47,000, while other reports like USA Today said that the Rivian R2 is expected to start around $45,000, making it a more accessible option in the premium electric SUV segment.

The initial variant to be launched, the Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive, is expected to have a higher price point, around $55,000.
