Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Handheld gaming enthusiasts around the world were shocked by the announcement of a substantial price increase for Steam Deck OLED models.

Valve, the company behind this popular portable console, officially raised the price on May 27, 2026, after the device returned to stock after months of stock shortages.

This price increase applies to the 512GB and 1TB OLED models, which are now priced much higher than before.

Valve stated that this price increase is a reflection of rising memory and storage costs, as well as global logistics conditions that are affecting the entire industry.

This price increase of up to 45% raises big questions among consumers and market analysts.

Drastic Increase in OLED Steam Deck Prices

The price increase for Steam Deck OLED is quite striking, especially for the two main variants.

The Steam Deck OLED 512GB model, which previously retailed for $549 USD, is now priced at $789 USD, representing an increase of $240 USD.

Meanwhile, the Steam Deck OLED 1TB model saw an even bigger jump, from a starting price of $649 USD to $949 USD, with an increase of up to $300 USD.

These percentage increases are significant, reaching up to 45% for some models, making it one of the largest price increases in the history of handheld gaming hardware.

Valve confirmed that the Steam Deck OLED hardware has not undergone any changes or increased specifications.

Factors Triggering Global Component Cost Spikes

The main cause behind the Steam Deck OLED price increase is the increasing cost of components, especially memory and storage.

Valve explicitly blamed a global computer memory shortage, known as “RAMageddon,” as one of the main driving factors.

The crisis is exacerbated by demand driven by AI companies, which require enormous memory volumes for their data centers, diverting production capacity away from consumer products.

The supply crisis for memory chips and flash has caused the prices of RAM, both DDR4 and DDR5, and SSDs to rise sharply in recent months.

This condition is expected to continue at least until 2027, perhaps even until 2030, as memory manufacturers prioritize orders from AI clients that offer higher profit margins.

Impact and Implications for Other Gaming Consoles

The price increase for the Steam Deck OLED follows the same pattern as other gaming consoles which also experienced price adjustments.

Consoles such as the Xbox SeriesAlthough the refurbished Steam Deck LCD model did not experience a price increase, the refurbished OLED model also did not escape a price adjustment.

This situation has raised concerns about the price of Valve's upcoming hardware, such as the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, which may be more expensive than initially expected.

For consumers, these price increases mean access to modern handheld gaming devices is increasingly difficult, especially for those on a limited budget.
