Brogdon, then 32, had just joined the New York Knicks on a non-guaranteed contract and was expected to be a key member of the team's roster.

Malcolm Brogdon announced his retirement in an exclusive statement to ESPN, explaining his transition away from basketball.

"Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career," Brogdon, 32, told ESPN in a statement.

"I have proudly given my mind, body and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards.

Despite performing well in Knicks training camp and having a strong chance of making the final roster, Brogdon realized he was no longer ready for the physical and mental demands of a long NBA season.

His frequent battles with injuries throughout his career were a significant factor in his decision.
