The Revolutionary Apple M5 Chip
The Apple M5 chip, built on third-generation 3nm technology, is at the core of the enhanced performance from the new MacBook Pro.
The CPU has 10 cores, consisting of six efficiency cores and four performance cores, which Apple claims are the "world's fastest CPU cores."
Multithreaded performance is up to 20% faster than the previous M4 chip.
The graphics department also sees a significant leap forward with a next-generation 10-core GPU architecture featuring a Neural Accelerator on each core.
This delivers up to 1.6x faster graphics performance in professional applications and up to 1.6x higher frame rates for gaming.
The third-generation ray tracing engine also delivers up to a 45% increase in graphics performance compared to the M4.
The 16-core Neural Engine in the M5 has been drastically improved, offering up to 3.5x faster AI performance than the M4 and even 6x faster than the M1.
These improvements are crucial for modern AI workloads, complementing the Neural Accelerators in the CPU and GPU.
Unified memory bandwidth has also increased by nearly 30% to 153GB/s, supporting up to 32GB of unified memory.
Specific performance improvements include up to 1.7x faster 3D rendering in Blender and up to 1.8x faster AI video upscaling in Topaz Video.
Additionally, build performance when compiling code in Xcode is 1.2x faster, and SSD performance is twice as fast as the previous generation.
