Colman Domingo Officially Plays the Cowardly Lion in 'Wicked: For Good'

The announcement was made on October 20, 2025, via an Instagram video shared by the official Wicked film account and Colman Domingo's personal account.

Wicked: For Good is the second and final installment of the big-screen adaptation of the popular Broadway musical Wicked.

Director Jon M. Chu returns to helm this ambitious project, which is scheduled to hit theaters on November 21, 2025.

Colman Domingo, an actor known for his roles in numerous films and television series, has officially been cast as the voice of the Cowardly Lion in Wicked: For Good.

Wicked: For Good is the final installment of the two-part film adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical Wicked.

The film is directed by Jon M. Chu, whose previous success was with the musical In the Heights.

Its release date of November 21, 2025, promises a captivating cinematic experience for audiences.

In the first Wicked film, the Cowardly Lion was portrayed as a lion cub rescued by Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey).

The character's development into the adult Cowardly Lion in Wicked: For Good will serve as an important bridge to the classic tale of The Wizard of Oz.

The casting process for Colman Domingo for the role of the Cowardly Lion turned out to be quite unique.

Director Jon M. Chu personally approached Colman Domingo via direct message (DM) on Instagram.

Chu told entertainment news outlet Deadline that he approached Domingo for the role of the Cowardly Lion on Instagram.

"I was like, 'It's not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time. I know you're busy. I'll come to you,'" Chu said, according to Deadline.

Domingo responded "Why the f--- not. Let's go," he recalled.

The Cowardly Lion is a central character from the classic film The Wizard of Oz (1939) and the musical Wicked, which serves as its prequel.

Colman Domingo joins a star-studded cast in Wicked: For Good.

Other big names include Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.

Also appearing are Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq, and Marissa Bode as Nessarose.

Although the Cowardly Lion is crucial to the Oz lore, Colman Domingo's screen time is not expected to be significant in the film.

The Cowardly Lion will accompany Dorothy, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow on their iconic journey to the Emerald City.
