Attention has focused on Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old truck driver from Yuba City, California, who was arrested at the scene.

He is suspected of being the primary cause of the fatal accident after his semi-trailer struck another vehicle that had slowed down.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers suspect Jashanpreet Singh was driving under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

How The Tragic Accident Happened

This accident happened at 1:10 p.m. local time on Highway 10 westbound, near the intersection with Highway 15.

Traffic in that lane was reportedly slow, but the semi-trailer truck driven by Jashanpreet Singh allegedly failed to stop and struck several vehicles in front of it.

This initial collision triggered a chain reaction involving a total of eight vehicles, including four semi-trailer trucks, two pickup trucks, and two private cars.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the truck sped away without showing any signs of braking or attempting to avoid the accident.

After the accident, Jashanpreet Singh was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries where medical staff and law enforcement officers conducted an examination that led to the conclusion that he was driving under the influence of drugs.

Three victims died in the incident, including a 54-year-old man from Upland, while the other two victims suffered severe burns and have not yet been identified.

Meanwhile, four other people, including Singh himself, sustained injuries and received medical treatment.

Jashanpreet Singh's Legal Proceedings

Jashanpreet Singh was arrested at the scene by California Highway Patrol officers immediately after the incident.

He was then held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, awaiting further legal proceedings.

Authorities have filed serious charges against Singh, including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs causing bodily injury.

Singh's bail was set at $250,000.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday in Rancho Superior Court in Rancho Cucamonga.

Immigration Status of Jashanpreet Singh

Additional information released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) adds to the complexity of the Jashanpreet Singh case.

According to DHS officials, Singh is an Indian citizen who entered the United States illegally in 2022, crossing the US-Mexico border.

CHP officers are also investigating whether Singh had a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) at the time of the crash, given that he was a truck driver.

This incident comes shortly after a similar case in Florida involving another Indian truck driver, Harjinder Singh, which also resulted in three deaths.

Fox News' Bill Melugin shared a photo of Singh, which he said came from a federal source.

The photo shows a man wearing a black turban and sporting a beard and mustache.
