The Mummy 4: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Reportedly Returning

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in talks to return for a new sequel to The Mummy 4, skipping the third film and helmed by the Scream directors.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Rumors of the return of iconic stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for the latest sequel to The Mummy franchise are growing.

The two are reportedly in negotiations to reprise their roles as Rick O'Connell and Evelyn O'Connell.

This move marks Universal Pictures' attempt to revive one of their most popular franchises from the early 2000s.

The film, which grossed over $422.5 million, launched a franchise that was one of Universal's biggest and most trusted titles of the early 2000s and made Fraser a leading man and a top star.

The film project is described not as a reboot, but rather a direct sequel that will explicitly ignore the events of the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

Rachel Weisz herself is not involved in the third film, with her role as Evelyn replaced by actress Maria Bello.

Behind the scenes, the Radio Silence directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will helm the project, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

They are known for successful works in the horror genre such as Ready or Not and the reboot of the Scream franchise.

The screenplay has been entrusted to David Coggeshall, the writer behind Orphan: First Kill.

A Star Reunion and a New Franchise Direction

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who had huge success in The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), were expected to rekindle their chemistry.

The first two films grossed over $400 million worldwide, making them box office phenomena.

Fraser's return was particularly highly anticipated following his recent career resurgence.

The decision to skip the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, was a significant strategic move.

The film received a lukewarm reception from critics and audiences and did not feature Rachel Weisz.

This allowed Universal to begin a new storyline more in line with the expectations of loyal fans.

Universal Pictures had previously attempted to reboot the franchise in 2017 with Tom Cruise, aiming to launch a Dark Universe.

However, the project failed, and the Dark Universe idea was scrapped.

Fraser himself stated that the reboot focused too much on horror and lost the "fun" that was the appeal of the original films.
