Smallwood passed away at 12:36 a.m. at Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Sandy Spring, Maryland.

The cause of death was complications from kidney failure, a condition that had limited his ability to record and perform in recent years.

The sad news was confirmed by his publicist, Bill Carpenter, to The Washington Post, as well as through an official statement from the family on their verified Instagram account.
