How Bad the Pickpockets in Madrid?

According to Madrid Traveller, pickpocketing is a significant problem in Madrid, especially in busy tourist areas and on public transportation, but it is primarily a non-violent, opportunistic crime. This is comparable to other major European cities like Rome or Paris, although it is often considered less severe than Barcelona.

Pickpockets typically target areas where people are less alert and crowded.

  • Public Transportation: Be careful on the Metro (especially Line 8 to the airport), buses, and at major stations during rush hour.
  • Popular Tourist Attractions: Areas like Plaza del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and Gran Vía are common targets.
  • Cafes and Restaurants: Thieves often target phones or wallets left on tables or bags hanging on the back of chairs.
  • Distraction Scams: Be wary of people who try to get too close, ask for directions with a large map, or try to sell items like rosemary, as these are common distraction techniques.
