Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Groundhog Day is an annual tradition celebrated regionally in the United States and Canada every February 2nd.
The celebration centers on predicting the arrival of spring, with a groundhog playing a central role in predicting the duration of the remaining winter, aims to predict how long winter will last.
According to folklore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow, winter will last for six more weeks.

Conversely, if the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, spring is predicted to arrive early.
This unique phenomenon involves observing the behavior of groundhogs, rodents known for their hibernation.
Despite its long historical roots, Groundhog Day remains popular in the 21st century as a fun way to welcome the changing seasons, despite of the scientific accuracy of its predictions.
The Origins of the Groundhog Day Tradition
The Groundhog Day tradition has deep roots in ancient European beliefs and Christian celebrations.
Its origins can be traced back to ancient European weather folklore, particularly in Germany.
In Europe, people believed that certain animals, such as badgers or bears, would emerge from hibernation on February 2nd.
If it was a sunny day and the animal saw its shadow, it was interpreted as a sign that winter would continue for another six weeks.
However, if the day was cloudy, it was considered a sign of milder weather and an early spring.Groundhog Day is also closely related to the Christian holiday of Candlemas, celebrated on February 2nd.
Candlemas marks the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.
On this day, Christians would bring candles to church to be blessed, believing this would bring blessings to their households for the remainder of the winter.
English folklore associated with Candlemas states, "If Candlemas is clear and bright, Winter, fly away again; If Candlemas brings clouds and rain, Winter, come no more."
When German immigrants arrived in Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, they brought this tradition with them.
Since hedgehogs were not native to the region, the groundhog was chosen as a substitute for this tradition.
Thus, the belief adapted to the local North American fauna.

Punxsutawney Phil and Modern Celebrations
Groundhog Day, as it is known in America, began to take shape in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
This small community in the Pennsylvania Wilds enthusiastically embraced the tradition.
The first official Groundhog Day celebration took place in 1887, thanks to a group known as the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.
The event centers on a semi-mythical groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, who has become a well-known icon in Pennsylvania.
Phil is cared for year-round by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle.
This Inner Circle member, always wearing a top hat and tuxedo, is responsible for feeding, caring for, and interpreting Phil's predictions every February 2nd.
Prediction Mechanism and Accuracy
The weather prediction mechanism of the Punxsutawney Phil groundhog is quite simple. Legend has it that if Phil "sees his shadow" (meaning it's a clear day), winter will last six more weeks.
However, if there's no shadow (meaning it's a cloudy day), spring will soon arrive.
While this tradition remains popular, research shows that groundhog predictions don't consistently correspond to the arrival of spring-like weather.
Historical records indicate that the predictions are accurate less than 40% of the time.
According to NOAA, between 2013 and 2023, Phil was only correct one out of seven times he saw his shadow.
Besides Punxsutawney Phil, there are other groundhogs that serve as weather forecasters in the United States and Canada.
One of the most famous is Wiarton Willie in Canada.
