How the Tragic Swing Ride Incident Happened

The giant swing ride collapsed on Saturday night, February 7, 2026, at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad.

The ride was operating with dozens of passengers when one of its support pillars suddenly collapsed.

Widely circulated videos show the terrifying moment the ride soared into the air before tilting and crashing to the ground.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described scenes of panic and chaos after the ride fell. Many visitors screamed and tried to escape the rubble.

Initial suspicions point to a mechanical or electrical failure as the primary cause of the ride's failure.

“A special investigation team formed to probe the incident has arrested two accused – Mohammad Shakir, a resident of Himachal Pradesh's Sirmour district, and the proprietor of Himachal Fun Care that operated the giant swing, and Nitesh from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, who worked under Shakir,” a spokesperson for Faridabad police told PTI, saying roles of others are being examined.

Fatalities and Injuries in This Tragedy

The swing ride collapse killed 59-year-old police inspector Jagdish Prasad.

Inspector Prasad, who was stationed in Palwal and assigned to the fair's security, rushed to the ride after seeing it tilt.

In his heroic efforts to rescue those trapped, the majority of the swing hit him in the face and head, causing serious injuries.

Inspector Prasad passed away while undergoing medical treatment.

He was due to retire in March after 36 years of service with the Haryana Armed Police Force.

In addition to the fatalities, 13 to 19 others were injured in the incident.

The injured included two policewomen and several visitors from various areas including Faridabad, Noida, Rajasthan, and Greater Noida.

Legal Action and Further Investigation

In response to this tragic incident, the Faridabad Police have arrested two individuals: Mohammad Shakir, the owner of Himachal Fun Care Company, which installed the ride at the fair, and Nitesh, an employee working under Shakir.

The two were the contractor and vendor responsible for operating the rides.

A First Information Report (FIR) was immediately registered, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Varun Dahiya was formed.

The SIT is tasked with conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and ensure safety standards across all festival rides.

As a precautionary measure, the entire amusement park area at the Surajkund Mela has been closed and sealed.

This closure has significantly impacted the vendors in the area, which includes approximately 14 rides and nearly 72 stalls, employing hundreds of workers.
