Liputan6.com, Jakarta - A tragic mass shooting and vehicle crash rocked the Jewish community in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, United States, on Thursday, March 12, 2026 after  horrific incident happened at Temple Israel, a Reform synagogue serving with 12,000 members.

The perpetrator died at the scene after exchanging gunfire with synagogue security guards.

The AP reported that the driver was armed with a rifle.

The incident began at approximately 12:19 p.m. local time, when a man drove his truck into the synagogue's main entrance.

The brutal act then continued, with the perpetrator driving his vehicle through the building and through hallways before bursting into flames.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities among congregants, staff, or children in the synagogue's childcare center at the time.

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X: "FBI personnel are on the scene with partners in Michigan and responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation out of Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan."

A Tense Chronology at Temple Israel

The chaos began when the truck driven by the perpetrator, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, rammed the front door of Temple Israel at high speed.

The vehicle did not stop at the entrance, but continued into the building, breaking through a wall and traveling through the synagogue's hallways.

Thick smoke immediately billowed from the building after the perpetrator's vehicle caught fire, likely due to the flammable materials inside.

Synogogue security personnel swiftly responded to the attack, engaging in a fierce gunfight with the perpetrator.

This exchange of fire proved crucial in stopping the perpetrator's further actions.

Extensive damage was visible throughout the synagogue, with debris scattered and the structure collapsing in several areas.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the swift response of security personnel and pre-rehearsed evacuation procedures prevented any casualties among congregants and staff.

Perpetrator's Identity and Suspected Motive

The perpetrator was identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old man.

Ghazali was born in Lebanon and arrived in the United States in 2011 as the spouse of a US citizen, obtaining citizenship in 2016.

He worked at a restaurant called Hamido in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

The exact cause of Ghazali's death could not be immediately determined, but his body was found charred inside his vehicle after a shootout with security officers.

The discovery of a large amount of explosives in the rear of the perpetrator's vehicle indicated a more destructive intent.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) quickly took over the investigation, classifying the incident as a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community."

Antisemitism is strongly suspected, especially considering the incident occurred amid growing global concerns about anti-Jewish sentiment following the US-Israel war against Iran.

Impact and Victim Response

In this mass shooting incident, miraculously, no congregants, staff, or children at the synagogue's childcare center were killed.

All were safely evacuated to a nearby location after the attack.

However, a synagogue security guard was injured after being struck by the attacker's vehicle and was knocked unconscious, but his condition is expected to improve.

Additionally, eight first responders received medical treatment at the hospital for smoke inhalation from the attacker's burning vehicle.

In total, approximately 30 law enforcement officers were also treated for smoke-related respiratory problems.

The investigation into this mass shooting involved multiple federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized that federal agents are working closely with local law enforcement to uncover all the facts behind the attack.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her deep concern, calling the incident "heartbreaking" and affirming that antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan.
