The first season of the Harry Potter series is officially titled "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," following the English title of the first book and film.
Main Casts and Production
The Harry Potter TV series is planned to run for a decade, with each season adapting one of J.K. Rowling's seven books.
Each season will consist of eight episodes, allowing ample room for deeper character and plot development than in the previous film series.
Behind the scenes, this massive project is being led by showrunner, writer, and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on hit series like Succession and His Dark Materials.
Mark Mylod, the veteran director of Succession, Game of Thrones, and The Last of Us, will serve as executive producer and direct several key episodes.
J.K. Rowling herself is also involved as an executive producer, ensuring the adaptation remains faithful to her original vision.
The series is a collaboration between HBO, Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films, with filming beginning in July 2025 at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England.
Three lead roles have been announced: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

Supporting Casts
In addition to the main trio, the supporting cast for the Harry Potter series also features promising big names.
John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, while Severus Snape will be played by Paapa Essiedu.
Janet McTeer has been cast as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost will bring Rubeus Hagrid to life.
Other notable cast members include Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Tristan Harland and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George Weasley.
Lox Pratt will play Draco Malfoy, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, completing the cast of iconic characters.
The casting process for the series was extensive, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout announced as the main cast in May 2025 after mass auditions.
The teaser trailer, released on March 25, 2026, became the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history, garnering 277 million views in its first 48 hours.
A behind-the-scenes special titled "Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic" was also released on April 5, 2026, featuring in-depth interviews with the cast and crew.
Controversy of the Harry Potter Series
Despite high enthusiasm, the Harry Potter series has not been without controversy since its announcement.
One major issue is J.K. Rowling's controversial views on transgender issues, which have sparked calls for a boycott from some fans.
Casting choices are also criticized.
The casting of Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, a character depicted as white in the books, has drawn criticism and accusations of "race-swapping."
Essiedu has even reportedly received death threats and racist abuse on social media due to the role.
Furthermore, the casting of John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore has also sparked controversy, as he is an American actor and 80 years old.
The issue of "franchise fatigue" also arose, with many questioning the need for a remake of such a beloved series, given that the last film was released in 2011, and some preferring the animated series.
The series' visual style also drew criticism following the trailer's release.
Some social media users described it as "dreary and dull" compared to the vibrant colors of the original film.
