Liputan6.com, Jakarta - The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie, returned to the public spotlight after a new claim emerged in April 2026.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing on February 1, 2026, from her home in the Catalina Foothills, near Tucson, Arizona.
This latest development came to light when a ransom note was received by TMZ, claiming that Nancy Guthrie was seen alive with her kidnappers in the state of Sonora, Mexico.

Sonora state borders Arizona, approximately 70 miles from Tucson, where Nancy disappeared.
However, the same ransom note also contained a conflicting claim that Nancy Guthrie was dead.
Nancy Guthrie's Whereabouts in Mexico Claim
In April 2026, the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie entered a new chapter with claims that she was in Mexico.
The ransom note received by TMZ stated that Nancy was seen living with her kidnappers in Sonora, Mexico.
The sender of the note specifically stated, "I saw her living with them in the state of Sonora, Mexico."
This claim aligns with the FBI's suspicions that since February 2026, Nancy Guthrie had been investigating the possibility that she was taken across the border into Mexico, although at the time there was no concrete evidence.
This theory is also supported by former Pima County Sheriff Rick Kastigar, who believes that Nancy may have been taken to Mexico to obtain medications needed to stay alive, with the intention of holding her as a bargaining chip for a ransom.
Sonora, which shares a land border with Arizona, is indeed a possible location for cross-border movement.
However, the validity of this claim is still under investigation by authorities.

Bitcoin Ransom Demand and Contradictory Death Claims
The ransom note received by TMZ not only claims Nancy Guthrie is in Mexico, but also demands payment in Bitcoin.
The original demand was 1 Bitcoin for "handing them over on a silver platter," but it was later changed to half a Bitcoin for information and half for public arrest.
Even more confusing, the same ransom note also stated that Nancy Guthrie was dead.
The contradiction between the claims of "seen alive in Mexico" and "deceased" from the same sender raised serious doubts among investigators.
Authorities' Response and Family's Hopes
Authorities, including the FBI, are investigating the validity of these latest claims.
However, the FBI has previously dismissed similar messages as fraudulent, demonstrating caution in responding to inconsistent information.
Nancy Guthrie's family, including her daughter Savannah Guthrie, has made a public plea for Nancy's return and expressed a willingness to pay the ransom.
Savannah Guthrie even returned to the "Today" show on April 6, 2026, after a two-month absence due to her mother's disappearance, demonstrating her commitment to continuing the search for her mother.
The investigation remained active in April 2026, focusing on forensic clues such as bloodstains on Nancy's property and doorbell camera footage showing a masked individual.
To date, no suspects have been identified.
