It came shortly before the deadline he had set for Iran to surrender or face a major military offensive.

The ceasefire decision, intensive negotiations mediated by Pakistan, announced by Donald Trump via his social media platform Truth Social, asserting that the ceasefire was "two-way."

Its purpose was to facilitate further negotiations to achieve "long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East."

On April 7, 2026, less than two hours before his 8 p.m. ET deadline, President Donald Trump announced his agreement to a two-week ceasefire with Iran.

This announcement was made live via his Truth Social account.

Donald Trump stated that the ceasefire was "two-way," meaning both sides were expected to abide by the cessation of hostilities.

“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump declared in a social media post announcing the temporary ceasefire

These negotiations were expected to lead to "long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East."

The ceasefire announced by Donald Trump had certain conditions imposed on the United States.

The primary condition was Iran's agreement to "the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SECURE OPENING" of the Strait of Hormuz.

Previously, Donald Trump had threatened to target Iranian power plants and bridges if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened.

Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme National Security Council stated that it would accept the two-week ceasefire conditionally, namely if attacks on Iran cease.

Iran also claimed that the agreement includes "continued Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz" and that it would allow safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks with the coordination of the Iranian Armed Forces.

Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, played a central and key role in brokering this ceasefire agreement.

Pakistan's diplomatic role is vital in bridging communication between Washington and Tehran amid escalating tensions.

Sharif announced that Iran, the US, and their allies had agreed to an immediate ceasefire in all regions, including Lebanon.

As a next step, Pakistan has invited delegations from the US and Iran to Islamabad on Friday, April 10, 2026, for further negotiations.

Donald Trump revealed that Iran has submitted a 10-point peace proposal, which he called a "workable basis for negotiations."

According to Iranian state media, the proposal includes several key conditions, including:
