Spaceballs 2 Gets a New Title, Parody Sequel Officially Released in 2027

Spaceballs 2, now titled Spaceballs: The New One, is set to arrive in 2027 with the return of the iconic cast and fresh parodies.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Sci-fi comedy fans, get ready! The long-awaited sequel to the cult film Spaceballs, now officially titled Spaceballs: The New One, is confirmed to hit theaters on April 23, 2027.

This exciting announcement was made by franchise creator Mel Brooks himself in a special video at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas.

The film promises both nostalgia and freshness, with the return of the original stars and a slew of new faces ready to enliven the galaxy.

Josh Greenbaum is directing, with the screenplay written by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.

The film is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Imagine Entertainment, guaranteeing the same visual quality and comedy as its predecessor.

Spaceballs: The New One is expected to once again parody various popular sci-fi franchises with Mel Brooks' signature humorous style.

New Title and the Reason Behind It

The title of the Spaceballs sequel has been a hot topic among fans.

Initially, many suspected the film would be titled Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, a joke even made in the original film.

However, Mel Brooks, with his trademark humor, announced the title change to Spaceballs: The New One.

He joked that he no longer needed to search for money because he had "found it" in his basement.

Brooks explained, "It's just like the old one, but newer!"

This announcement was met with enthusiasm at CinemaCon 2026, confirming that the sequel would maintain the comedic spirit of the original.

The Return of Iconic Stars and New Faces

One of the main attractions of Spaceballs: The New One is the return of most of the beloved original cast.

Mel Brooks will reprise his two iconic characters, Yogurt and President Skroob.

Most anticipated is the return of Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet, marking his first live-action cinematic appearance since 1997.

Bill Pullman will also return as Lone Starr, alongside Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa (now Queen Vespa), and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz.

In addition to the veterans, the film also features promising new talent, including:

  • Josh Gad
  • Keke Palmer
  • Lewis Pullman
  • Anthony Carrigan

Josh Greenbaum, who previously directed Strays and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, will direct the film.

The screenplay was written by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez, with Mel Brooks, Josh Gad, Josh Greenbaum, Kevin Salter, Jeb Brody, Brian Grazer, and Ron Howard producing.

Plot Leaks and Anticipated Parodies

Plot details for Spaceballs: The New One are currently under wraps and are being "guarded under lock and key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield."

However, it's certain that the film will continue its tradition of sci-fi parodies, targeting recent popular franchises.

A trailer shown exclusively at CinemaCon 2026 provided a glimpse of what's to come.

The trailer featured parodies of Star Wars, Avatar, and Avengers: Endgame. Some of the scenes seen include:

  • Dark Helmet's helmet is found in the sand, reminiscent of the opening scene of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
  • The fight resembles a lightsaber (or Schwartz ring).
  • Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet in the restroom, encountering a Na'vi creature from Avatar, and is seen wearing 3D glasses to stare at the Na'vi's crotch.
  • Dark Helmet's updated appearance resembles Kylo Ren from the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
  • A portal similar to Doctor Strange's portal in Avengers: Endgame.
