Hulk Hogan's Controversial Admission to Steroid Use
Hulk Hogan publicly admitted in 1994 that he had used anabolic steroids for 13 years, starting in 1976, "to get big."
He even revealed that wrestling promoter Vincent McMahon Jr.'s secretary sometimes ordered the drugs for him.
In the early 1990s, Hogan took a leave of absence from the WWF amid public scrutiny over allegations that a doctor illegally sold steroids to WWF wrestlers, including himself.
Although he testified that Vince McMahon never requested or supplied the steroids, Hogan admitted to his voluntary steroid use.
Hogan's admitted long-term anabolic steroid use during his peak in the 1980s and early 1990s raised serious concerns about long-term cardiovascular effects.
Prolonged use of high doses of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has been linked to the development of hypertension, left ventricular dysfunction, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, stroke, and sudden cardiac death.
Sex Tape Scandal and Legal Battle Against Gawker
In 2012, the internet media company Gawker published portions of a sex tape featuring Hogan and Heather Clem, then the wife of Hogan's friend, Bubba the Love Sponge.
The tape was secretly made in 2007.
Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, filed a lawsuit against Gawker Media in 2013 for invasion of privacy, infringement of personality rights, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
He sought $100 million in damages.
In March 2016, a jury found Gawker Media guilty and awarded Hogan $115 million in compensatory damages and $25 million in punitive damages, for a total of $140 million.
As a result of this ruling, Gawker filed for bankruptcy in June 2016.
Although Gawker initially promised to appeal, they ultimately reached a $31 million settlement with Hogan in November 2016.
During this legal process, transcripts of other unpublished recordings were leaked, revealing Hogan using racial slurs while discussing his daughter's Black boyfriend.
This incident led WWE to terminate Hogan's contract in July 2015, and Hogan later apologized for his comments.
