National Mall "8647" Mysterious Numbers, What Does It Mean?

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - The discovery of the numbers "8647" etched into the grass on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on June 11, 2026, has sparked an intensive investigation by United States authorities.

The incident was immediately taken seriously, given the phrase's reputation as a symbol of protests against President Donald Trump.

The US National Park Service "responded to reports of vandalism" around 11:30 a.m. ET on Thursday morning, the agency said in a statement.

"The cause of the discoloration has not yet been determined. Grass samples have been collected for testing. The investigation is ongoing."

A Department of Home Affairs spokesman called the incident "deranged vandalism."

"Any threat against the president is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold ​those responsible accountable," the spokesperson said in a statement.

The numbers, which appeared on the west lawn of the Washington Monument, just east of the World War II Memorial, appeared as dead or discolored grass.

The first sighting of the numbers "8647" was recorded on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time, after reports of the vandalism were received.

EarthCam footage shows that these markings gradually became visible over the previous few days.

The markings spanned much of the National Mall, with the number "8" most clearly visible from the top of the Washington Monument, while the numbers "6," "4," and "7" appeared more faintly.

Grass samples were collected for testing to determine the exact cause of the discoloration or death of the grass.

The phrase "8647" has been widely adopted by opponents of the Donald Trump administration as an expression of discontent.

The number "86" is a slang term originating in the restaurant industry, meaning "to expel," "to reject," or "to get rid of" someone or something.

Meanwhile, the number "47" specifically refers to Donald Trump, the 47th president of the United States.

The combination of these two numbers has been interpreted by Trump allies and the Justice Department as a potential call to violence or a direct threat against the president.

“Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible. They should also immediately seek psychiatric help to treat their severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has warped their brains and made them sick in the head,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said in a statement Thursday.

The incident happened just days before several major events on the National Mall, including a UFC fight coinciding with Trump's birthday, the "Great American State Fair," and the 250th anniversary of the United States.

A similar controversy arose in April 2026, when former FBI Director James Comey was indicted for a 2025 social media post featuring seashells arranged in the shape of "86 47."

Even so, Comey denied that the post was a call for violence.
