Liputan6.com, Jakarta Recently, Toho announced the development of a new film titled "Godzilla Minus Zero" at the Godzilla Day 2025 celebration in Tokyo.

The film will once again be directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the mastermind behind the phenomenal success of the recently Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One."

This announcement comes after "Godzilla Minus One" garnered critical acclaim and international awards, including an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, become the first ever Godzilla movie to win the award.

While plot details and an official release date for "Godzilla Minus Zero" have not yet been revealed, the new title indicates a continuation of the epic story set in post-war Japan.

The film's official logo has also been unveiled, fueling the excitement of fans anticipating the next chapter in the battle against the terrifying Godzilla.

Early Details on Godzilla Minus Zero

The announcement of Godzilla Minus Zero was made on Godzilla Day 2025, a significant and highly anticipated moment for loyal fans of the giant monster.

Takashi Yamazaki, the visionary director behind the smash hit "Minus One," is confirmed to return to helm the project.

He will serve as director, screenwriter, and visual effects supervisor, ensuring consistent quality.

While the title and Yamazaki's involvement strongly suggest this is a direct sequel to the previous installment, details regarding an official release date or specific storyline for "Godzilla Minus Zero" remain tightly under wraps.

However, the film's official logo, interestingly drawn by Yamazaki himself.

Yamazaki previously hinted that he was actively writing the screenplay and working on storyboards for a new Godzilla film.

He also openly expressed his hope for a larger production budget from Toho.

If these hopes are met, Godzilla Minus Zero could be even more ambitious and spectacular than its prequel.

The Phenomenal Success of Godzilla Minus One

Before the announcement of Godzilla Minus Zero, its prequel, "Godzilla Minus One," had already made impressive history in the global cinema scene.

Released on November 3, 2023, in Japan, the film grossed over $115 million globally against a relatively small production budget of only around $10–15 million.

This financial achievement made it the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film of all time.

Critical reception for "Godzilla Minus One" was overwhelming, as evidenced by its 98% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes from hundreds of reviews.

The film not only won eight awards at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize, including Best Picture, but also achieved impressive international acclaim.

First Oscar-Winning Godzilla Movie

The highlight of this achievement was its Oscar win for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.

This marks the first time a film in the Godzilla franchise has been nominated for and won an Oscar, a recognition of the visual quality produced by a small team of just 35 artists, far below Hollywood production standards.

The story of "Godzilla Minus One" is set in a devastated post-war Japan, where the country faces the unfathomable threat of Godzilla.

The story highlights historical trauma, individual struggles, and humanity's collective efforts to unite against an indescribable destructive force, its emotional resonance contributing to the film's success.
